Midlife. Menopause. For many women, these words have long been associated with loss—loss of youth, fertility, energy, or even identity. We’re told to expect a “midlife crisis” or brace for the dreaded symptoms of menopause as though it’s all downhill from here. But what if we’ve been looking at it all wrong?
Just as matrescence has helped us reframe the transition into motherhood—not simply as a biological change but as a powerful psychological and emotional shift—so too can we begin to see menopause and midlife in a new light. This stage of life is not an ending, but a transformation: a kind of second adolescence where hormones again signal a transition into a new identity.
Enter the Queenager.
Coined by Eleanor Mills and named Word of the Year in 2022, Queenager is a term that’s resonating with a generation of women who are redefining what it means to grow older. No longer shrinking into the background, Queenagers are stepping into their power—bringing together the wisdom and life experience of age with a renewed sense of self, clarity, and purpose.
This time of life can offer a kind of liberation:
- A deepening awareness of our own values and priorities.
- A stronger sense of what (and who) really matters.
- The freedom to care less about external validation and more about authenticity.
- A desire to live meaningfully in the time that remains.
The changes are real—physically, emotionally, socially. For some women, this transition brings grief, disorientation, or uncertainty. And it can also be a powerful period of growth, reinvention, and self-compassion.
As a psychologist working with women through different life stages, I see this transformation not as a crisis, but as an awakening. In the same way we have navigated identity shifts before, we now have an opportunity to consciously shape what comes next.
Let’s talk more about menopause, midlife, and the inner revolution of becoming a Queenager. There’s wisdom in the shift. And there’s power in the naming.
